Shani Mott, a scholar of Black studies at Johns Hopkins University whose examinations of race and power in America extended beyond the classroom to her employer, her city and even her own home, has died in Baltimore. She died of adrenal cancer on March 12, said her husband, Nathan Connolly, a professor of history at Johns Hopkins. Though Dr. Mott spent her career in some of academia’s elite spaces, she was firmly committed to the idea that scholarship should be grounded and tangible, not succumbing to ivory tower abstraction. She encouraged students to turn a critical eye to their own backgrounds and to the realities of the world around them. In a city like Baltimore, with its complicated and often cruel racial history, there was plenty to scrutinize.

I’m happy to report that the books are now organized alphabetically by author, and the extra copies have been put into other people’s hands. What’s the last great book you read? For me a great book is a book that I want to make someone else read immediately. And, too, a great book is one that makes me want to tell a story back. The last story that made me feel that way was in the 2023 “Best American Short Stories.” It’s by Da-Lin.

It breaks your heart, but as Carly Simon sang, there is more room in a broken heart. And yet here we are, atoms with consciousness, each of us a living improbability forged of chaos and dead stars. Alice McDermott recalls reading the novel “The Quiet American” as a college student in the 1970s and being struck by the ridiculousness of Graham Greene ’s female characters: “They were clichés, childish and unbelievable.” Although she was impressed by how “brilliantly” he foresaw the “political fiasco” of America’s time in Vietnam, she bristled over a scene in which the book’s narrator, a grizzled British journalist, gazes at some clean-looking “American girls” eating ice cream in the Saigon heat and envies their simple “sterilized world.” “It was so dismissive,” she says. “I remember, even at 19, thinking, ‘No, that can’t be right.’”“Absolution,” McDermott’s ninth novel, considers the rich interior lives of some of these seemingly ordinary “girls.” “Telling a familiar story from an unfamiliar perspective appeals to me,” says McDermott, 70, who lives in Bethesda, Md., with her husband, David Armstrong , a retired neuroscientist and the father of her three adult children. She says that reading Tom Stoppard ’s absurdist play about Hamlet’s friends, “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” reinforced her fascination with what she calls “the underside of a story.” “I want to know what the minor characters are up to behind the scenes,” she says.

ABSOLUTION, by Alice McDermottAlice McDermott is rightly celebrated for her granular, nuanced portraits of mid-20th-century life, with a particular focus on Irish Americans. Her fans may be startled, then, to find themselves plunged into 1963 Saigon at the start of her enveloping new novel, “Absolution,” whose lofty title belies its sensory, gritty humanity. McDermott’s contextual leap is not as great as it might seem. WARE, England (AP) — Buffalo Bills edge rusher Von Miller says it's a “safe bet” that he'll make his season debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Miller, who sustained a knee injury last November, said Friday there's a “94 1/2 percent” likelihood of him suiting up at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “I am excited to play American football in front this crowd,” said Miller, the NFL’s active leader in sacks. He tore a ligament and sustained cartilage damage in his right knee during a win at Detroit last Thanksgiving Day. Under NFL rules, Miller opened a three-week window in which he’s allowed to practice before he’s required to be activated or returned to the injured list.

Just before I gave birth, a friend sent me a copy of “Operating Instructions” (1993), the writer Anne Lamott’s diary of her first year as a mother. A week or so later I began to read it very slowly, so that my son would be around the same age as Lamott’s was when she wrote each entry (also, I didn’t have a lot of free time). A handful of newish books each address the conflicts between motherhood and creative work in different ways. The realities of motherhood often feel impossible to articulate; other people’s attempts to do so are among the best gifts I could imagine. Pretty PotsA Dutch Oven to Brighten the Kitchen
One of Sean McDermott’s first jobs in football wasn’t as an assistant coach. He was the assistant to the head coach. But when the team hired Andy Reid in 1999 it didn’t take him long to notice this unusually bright and hardworking gopher in the team’s front office. Reid thought McDermott should work directly for him. “I asked them if I could steal him,” Reid says.
